INGREDIENTS

  • For meat patties:
  • 2 cups (1 pound) ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • For 5 Bread Stuffing Patties:
  • 4 cups soft 1/2-inch bread cubes
  • 1/4 cup each hot milk and melted fat or meat drippings
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  • For Barbecue Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup each shortening or meat drippings, finely chopped celery, vinegar and tomato puree or tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped onion
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

DIRECTIONS

  • Combine ground beef, salt, and pepper. Shape into 10 meat balls. Place 3 inches apart on sheet of waxed paper. Cover with another sheet of waxed paper. Flatten meat balls into patties about 3 inches in diameter.
  • For Bread Stuffing Patties: Combine soft bread cubes, hot milk, beaten egg, fat, salt, pepper, and onion. Shape into 5 bread patties about 3 inches in diameter.
  • For BBQ Sauce: Melt shortening in skillet. Add onion and celery and saute until tender. Add vinegar, tomato puree, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, sugar, water, pepper, and salt. Simmer 10 minutes.
  • To Make Hamburger Stacks: Place 5 meat patties in shallow baking dish or pan. Top each with bread patty. Finish by placing a meat patty on top of each bread patty. Pour barbecue sauce over hamburger stacks. Bake in moderate oven (375°F.) 30 minutes, occasionally basting stacks with barbecue sauce. Serves 5.
