INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 pounds ground chuck
  • 1 red or white onion cut into 1/4 inch rings
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • Toppings:
  • 6 hamburger buns, toasted, if desired
  • 6 slices American cheese, or cheese of choice
  • 6 lettuce leaves
  • 1 beefsteak tomato, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 of a red or white onion, thinly sliced
  • 6 pickle slices
  • Other toppings of choice

DIRECTIONS

  • Place ground meat into a bowl. Sprinkle salt, black pepper, paprika, brown sugar, garlic and onion powder, and cayenne pepper over the meat. Using your hands, work the seasonings into the meat to mix all well. Divide the meat into 6 equal portions and form each portion into a ball. Flatten each ball to form a patty about 1/2 inch thick.
  • Preheat grill or grill pan to medium high heat. Grill the onion rings, stirring often, until they brown slightly and become translucent. Remove from grill and set aside.
  • Place patties onto grill and cook for 2 minutes. Flip each patty over and press each patty with a spatula to gently flatten each patty to 1/2 inch thickness. Cook for 2 minutes. Flip each patty over. Add cheese to the top of each patty. Cook for 2 minutes or until desired temperature is reach with an instant read thermometer.
  • Remove patties from the heat and set aside if buns are to be toasted. If buns are not to be toasted, place a patty on the bottom of each bun. Top each patty with grilled onion. Garnish patties with desired toppings. Serve and enjoy.
