INGREDIENTS

  • 2/3 cup unsifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 2 squares (2 oz) unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup each chopped walnuts and snipped dates

DIRECTIONS

  • Preheat oven to 350° F. Sift flour with baking powder. In a small, heavy saucepan over low heat, slowly melt butter with chocolate; cool slightly. In a large bowl beat eggs. Add sugar gradually; beat until smooth and well combined. Blend in chocolate mixture and vanilla. Add flour mixture; mix well. Stir in walnuts and dates.
  • Spread batter evenly in a greased or nonstick, 8-inch square baking pan. Bake until edges begin to pull away from pan sides and a wooden toothpick comes out clean when inserted near the center (about 25 minutes).
  • Place pan on a wire rack; cool for 20 to 30 minutes. Cut into 2-inch squares. Brownies are at their best served slightly warm, topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
