INGREDIENTS

  • 4 or 5 fresh or canned tomatillos
  • 3 canned green chiles, seeded (or 1 serrano or jalapeno chile, if hotter sauce is desired)
  • 2 large avocados
  • 1 tablespoon minced onion
  • Salt and pepper
  • 1/4 cup cilantro leaves, minced, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

  • If using fresh tomatillos, discard husks and wash tomatillos. Boil in a small amount of water until just tender, about 5 minutes. Drain.
  • If using one of the hotter fresh chiles, discard stem and seeds. Combine tomatillos and chiles in a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Halve the avocados and remove seed. Scoop out pulp and mash with a fork. Stir in tomatillo mixture and onions. Add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle cilantro over top.
