INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 lb. hamburger meat, cooked and drained
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 1/2 bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 cup catsup
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (6oz) can tomato paste
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard

DIRECTIONS

  • Heat cast iron skillet or other heavy bottomed pot over medium-high heat. Add vegetable oil. When oil begins to shimmer, add the hamburger meat and brown. Once meat is browned, drain grease using a colander.
  • Chop onion and bell pepper. Return meat to skillet and return to heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and stir to mix well. Cook for 5 minutes stirring occasionally.
  • Add the remaining ingredients to the skillet and mix well. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer. Cook for an hour or so, stirring occasionally. The longer the mixture cooks the better the ingredients meld. Add water as necessary to prevent the mixture from drying out.
  • Serve on hamburger buns along with pickle slices if desired.
