Chocolate Layer Cake Recipe is made from scratch with unsweetened cocoa powder, butter, sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, buttermilk and cake flour which is then topped with chocolate buttercream icing creating a delicious Chocolate Layer Cake.

INGREDIENTS
|
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
powder
|
3/4 cup boiling water
|
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
or butter
|
2 cups sugar
|
2 eggs
|
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
|
1/4 teaspoon salt
|
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
|
1 cup buttermilk
|
2 cups sifted cake flour
|
2 cups Chocolate Buttercream Icing (search recipes)
|

DIRECTIONS
|
1:
Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter and lightly flour two 8- by 2-inch round cake pans; line bottom of each with a circle of waxed paper. Stir cocoa into boiling water until smooth; set aside.

In large bowl of electric mixer, Cream shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Beat in vanilla and salt.

Stir baking soda into buttermilk. Add 1/2 cup of the flour to egg mixture; then add 1/3 cup buttermilk mixture. Continue to add flour and
buttermilk alternately, beating well after each addition. Stir in cocoa mixture.

Divide the batter evenly between the two cake pans. Bake until done (30 to 35 minutes). Cool in pans 5 minutes, then turn out on wire
racks to finish cooling. Ice and decorate with Chocolate Buttercream Icing.
