How to Season a Cast Iron Skillet with Perfect Results
Any cast iron utensil may be seasoned using the following process.
- Wash skillet with soap and water. Dry thoroughly.
- Place skillet in cold oven. Turn oven to 200°F or to lowest setting possible.
- Leave skillet in oven long enough for it to get warm, but not hot.
- When skillet is warm, rub all over with a teaspoonful of oil, to include the handle.
- Use a dry cloth and try to rub off all of the oil.
- Place a sheet pan on bottom rack of oven. Place skillet in oven on middle rack -
UPSIDE DOWN.
- Turn oven to highest setting. Bake skillet for one hour.
- Kill heat leaving skillet inside until completely cooled.
- For best possible results, repeat process two more times - will take about 8 hours
total - but will be worth it.
Hint: after using skillet and while still hot, place about a tablespoon of oil in
the skillet, followed by a tablespoon of salt. Holding a couple of wadded paper
towels with tongs, scrub the inside of the skillet with the salt/oil mixture to
remove any food particles. Wipe the skillet out with a dry cloth and store. (Never
use soap and water.)
