Old Fashioned Split Pea Soup Recipe uses very simple ingredients but produces a soup with layers of flavors and textures using split peas, cubed ham, carrot, onions, potato, green pepper and salt and pepper.

INGREDIENTS
|
1 cup split peas
|
1 ham-bone or pieces of cubed ham
|
1 carrot, grated
|
2 medium onions, minced
|
1 potato, grated
|
1/4 cup diced celery
|
1/4 cup finely chopped green pepper
|
Salt and pepper to taste
|

|
|
|

DIRECTIONS
|
1:
Cover the split peas with 6 cups boiling water; let soak for 1 hour.
|

Add ham bone, carrot, onions, potato, celery and green pepper.
|
|
3:
Season with salt and pepper. Simmer until peas are tender. Add water if needed; simmer for 5 to 10 minutes longer.
|

4:
Pour into soup bowls; garnish with diced ham.
