Southern Fried Okra Recipe uses fresh okra, eggs, hot sauce, buttermilk, flour, corn meal, baking powder, salt and pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and oil in frying this delicious fried okra recipe.

INGREDIENTS
1 lb. fresh okra pods
2 eggs, beaten
2 tbsp hot sauce
1/4 cup buttermilk, milk if have too
1 cup flour
1 cup corn meal
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
Vegetable oil, for cooking

DIRECTIONS
1: Wash and dry okra pods. Cut tips off of okra pods making the pods uniform in thickness. Cut the stem end off. Cut the okra, crosswise, into 1/2 inch thick portions. Combine the eggs, buttermilk, and hot sauce in a large bowl. Combine all of the dry ingredients and mix well. A plastic bag, such as those used in produce of the grocery, works very well for this purpose. Pour the dry ingredients into the plastic bag.

2: Place 1/4 of the okra sections into the egg mixture and coat well. Using a large slotted spoon, remove the okra portions from the egg mixture. Once drained place the okra into the dry mixture and gently toss the okra to coat well. Remove the breaded coated okra from the dry mixture bag, removing excess breading. Gently toss the okra inside of the strainer to remove excess breading, set aside. Repeat the process until all of the okra is breaded.

3: The okra may be cooked at this time or placed on a parchment lined sheet pan so that the individual portions are not touching and placed into a freezer to freeze. Frozen okra will hold very well inside a zipper bag in a freezer for later use.

4: To cook the okra, place about 2 inches of vegetable oil into a large skillet. Over medium-high heat, heat the oil to 360°F. Once the oil is at temperature, carefully add about 1/4 of the okra to the hot grease. Adjust the temperature if necessary to maintain a temperature as close to 350°F as possible. Cook the okra for 3 minutes and then quickly remove from the hot oil with a large slotted spoon and place onto a paper towel lined platter. (Cook okra may be held in a heated oven set to the lowest temperature setting while the remaining okra is cooked.) Repeat the process until all of the okra has been cooked.
